Bench Dog 40-001 ProTop Contractor Benchtop Router Table

Bench Dog 40-001 ProTop Contractor Benchtop Router Tablestar rating 5Furniture DudeApril 14, 2010I have had my table for about 2 years now and I am very happy with it. I have made a lot of really neat stuff with it and I have tweaked mine out with fence extensions, a switch, and a custom coping sled. I put my Porter Cable 892 router on here and it has been great. I originally had a Freud 3HP pig and I left it hanging on the insert, which was a big mistake. After two weeks of that it warped my insert. DON’T MAKE MY MISTAKE. However it was a good excuse to get a porter cable router and a new insert. Sometimes the vibration wiggles the set screws a bit, but I just check them before working. Over all I would recommend this table.

The unit did not have a switch and I wanted one. Bench Dog did make one then discontinued it for some reason. I bought an aftermarket one and its fine. So far I am happy with the table, it really changes what you can do with a router. There is lots to learn.

I had it down between this and the other cabinet table and decided to go with the bench dog because of the nice looking birch cabinet. My buddy bought the other cabinet, which is white. He put his together in less than an hour and mine took almost three (between coffee cups) His fence is higher but mine looks cooler in my opinion. They both seemed like decent buys so I would not hesitate.

I know, how hard can it be right? It really is not but I have this thing about accuarate and well drawn directions. The only other complaint is about getting a tracking number out of them. Bench Dog ships fast but is dismally slow about getting the tracking number. Other than that, I am happy with the table, it does a nice job and has some good features.

I recommend not storing your router on the insert, in the table. If you do, over time it will sag your insert. I was using a heavy 3HP router, why? I switched over to a smaller porter cable and stored it in the cabinet when not in use, problem solved.

It was so nice I went out and bought the bench dog pro lift to go with it. It slid right in and went to work. I really like the fence, not totally in love with the dust port, but there are other adaptor's and solutions out there. Very heavy and nice features. This was pretty easy to put together.

I would have liked to see an external switch on it (like the bosch) that would have been a good idea. I built my own since I know a thing or two about electrical work. I did struggle with the instructions a bit, but eventually figured it out.
