The suggestion for using 1/2" PVC pipe to represent the track and raising it on short vertical lengths of pipe was the perfect answer and got me going again.

Tried some of Jack's ideas and they work; Jack is a master of this art. With no reflect on my rating of this book, I wish he had added more details of his ideas for tunnel construction and details.
