N Scale Railroading: Getting Started in the Hobby, Second Editionstar rating 5Phyllis Vanieken-RyalsMay 6, 2010I really liked this book. It has been updated with new ideas and reminders of old ideas. I have really enjoyed this one. I have the 1st addition and would recommend that everyone get the second one also.
N Scale Railroading: Getting Started in the Hobby, Second Editionstar rating 5Ernest ColwellMarch 15, 2010I have all earlier copies of this book, and it was due for an update. Marty McGuirk is a great editor and author and writes in a clear and concise manner. Futhermore he has the depth of experience in the hobby that prevents him from promoting every new idea that comes down the pike juat because it's novel. What he tells us will work, will work! Thanks Marty for a great update.
N Scale Railroading: Getting Started in the Hobby, Second Editionstar rating 5CraigFebruary 22, 2010I bought the first edition of this book when I shifted from HO to N scale and found it extremely helpful. It doesn't answer every question you might have, but gives you enough to get started. My only concern with the earlier version (1999) was that it was fast becoming outdated, especially with regard to new options for track and DCC. I skimmed this new edition recently at a hobby store and found that it has covered all those points very well. Given the recent update I would very much recommend this for the new N scale modeler as his/her first book on the topic.

N Scale Railroading: Getting Started in the Hobby, Second Editionstar rating 5John EckelNovember 12, 2009Kalmbach, as usual, has compiled a very well done update on the hobby, with new photos and a section on DCC. I recommend any and all Kalmbach books concerning 'Model Railroading' in any scale.
N Scale Railroading: Getting Started in the Hobby, Second Editionstar rating 5Jacques BourdouxheNovember 11, 2009If you already own the 1st edition, as I do, save your money. Don't get me wrong, the 1st edition is what made me discover N scale and I like Marty's writing style. The beauty of the 1st issue, for a beginner living in an apartment, is that the Carolina Central was built on a simple hollow core door. The 2nd edition uses a more complicated benchwork, requiring special tools such as a circular saw.
