The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotivesstar rating 2Kimball KelseyDecember 8, 2010This is a rehash of older guides but with a lot less information. The originals "The Contempory Diesel Spotter's Guide", and "The Second Diesel Spotter's Guide" were much more in depth. Lastly, "MR's Diesel Locomotives Cyclopedia - Volume 2" will help a lot more. Find those in used book stores and on the net.
The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotivesstar rating 4Sebastian van SchaikSeptember 14, 2010I think the main advantage of this book is to find all US diesel types in one book. A number of pictures is not clear enough to really determine the details, therefor the pictures should be bigger. But I like it and it certainly served my intentions to get knowledge of all types.
The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotivesstar rating 5JamesApril 13, 2010I have owned this book for some time now and continue to page through it several times a week. A great simple reference point for most diesels.
The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotivesstar rating 3Jim OliverMarch 4, 2010For spotting features, this is moderate, especially in that many of the photos are too small and details are hidden in the shadows. NOT GOOD! Jeff's explanations were good and I liked the history of and how a diesel engine worked. His breakdown of each basic type was good, but again, the reference photos did not live up to my expectations. For noting differences in these locos, I'd suggest a Diesel Spotter's Guide Vol 1 or 2.
The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotivesstar rating 3Richard B. DavisFebruary 18, 2010A little light on the economic reasons the various permutations came about. The mechanics were not the depth I was looking for. But, it did become clear that since these machines were pretty much made to order- many variations exist.
The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotivesstar rating 5Ricardo Hernández-LecandaJanuary 17, 2010I receive the Book and I simply love it. Even for Mexican Railfans is a very good source of information. I just want to add something. On page 65 the author mentioned "Built after Bombardier acquired MLW, the M-424 was a 2,000-hp unit that was nearly identical to the M-420........" I think Mr. Wilson makes an involuntary mistake, the NdeM and de Ferrocarril del Pacífico M-424 were 2,400 H.p. instead of 2,000. Ricardo Hernández-Lecanda. http://rihel.com

The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotivesstar rating 5Scott HerrickDecember 23, 2009This book is terrific! It is simple, direct, lots of great facts and easy for instant information and reference. Love the graphs showing year built, how many and years of service etc. This is not intended to be the "diesel spotters guide". I have alot of railroad books and I would recommend this to anyone!
